Yup, you read that correctly. Because we don't just go kayaking; we go to Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruise Island, where we will kayak though some of the most beautiful and accessible caves in the world! Scorpion Anchorage is at a very calm and protected part of the island, so we are all-but-guaranteed that we will be able to go inside many of the caves. We did this some years ago, and it was AMAZING! We went through all the caves and had a blast!

ITINERARY: We’ll meet at the Ventura Harbor at 07:00 for check-in. The boat departs at 08:00. It takes about an hour to cross the channel unless we see dolphins or whales, in which case they’ll take a little time to follow along and talk about them. The captain of the boat is actually a good friend of mine and is very skilled at finding wildlife. So, while there are no guarantees, we'll likely see some whales or dolphins.

When we get to the island it takes an hour or so to get over to the kayaks, get fitted for gear and get the basic kayaking lesson and safety talk. Then we go on the water with the guides along the cliffs in one direction, exploring the beautiful sea caves as we go. At some point we turn around and come back past the landing area and explore in the other direction. We’ll be in the water 2.5 to 3 hours.

We’ll then return to the beach to eat lunch, and can go walking up the canyon or along the cliff-tops, or maybe get in a little snorkeling. We should start heading back around 15:00, and be back at the harbor around 17:00.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: • Bring your own lunch (the outfitter is not permitted by the Park to supply food).

• Although we'll almost for sure be able to get in the caves, there are no guarantees, as high surf may prevent us from going in safely.

• Bring beach clothes, but also warm clothes, as the ferry ride will be cold. Clothing made from synthetic fibers are warmer when wet, and dry out more quickly than those made from natural fibers. Pack clothing which can be layered, as temperatures may vary greatly during the trips across the channel, and as the day progresses. Examples for layering: undershirt, shirt, sweatshirt or sweater, jacket, and especially useful – a nylon windbreaker.

• IMPORTANT: Limit the weight of any one item to no more than 45 pounds!

• All you will take with you on your kayak is a bottle of water and perhaps a protein bar. Everything else waits for you in a storage locker on the beach. There has never been an issue with anything stolen, but they can lock up valuables inside their gear box if you desire. Your lunch, snacks, and beverages need to be inside rodent and raven-proof containers (like hard plastic coolers, not Styrofoam). NO ALCOHOL AT ANY POINT. Bring everything onshore upon arrival at the island. You can skip the ranger orientation – just tell them that you are with Channel Islands Adventure Company, and they will let you pass.

SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING:

• A duffel bag or daypack. You will wear, or it will hold all of your personal items (except food).

• Swimsuits or shorts are preferred wear for kayaking. You will wear a paddling jacket and life vest while kayaking, the insulating effects of which are considerable. If you use a back brace, bring it.

• Non-skid footwear that you don't mind getting wet. Diving booties, sport sandals, or aqua shoes, and even old tennis shoes will work for cave kayaking; floppy sandals without heel straps and bare feet will not.

• Waterproof, non-slimy SPF 30+ sunscreen.

• Water bottle with water.

• A hat with a brim.

• Lunch. In a hard rodent-resistant container.

• Dry clothes and small towel for after paddling.

EFFICIENCY TRICKS • Wear your bathing suit under your clothing in the morning, so as not to waste time waiting in line to change clothes after landing at the island. Use the restroom on the ferry before landing at the island, again so as not to waste time waiting in line after landing.

• If you have any doubts about your sea legs, take medication before boarding the boat.

• There are NO emergency medical services available at the islands – prepare accordingly!

All right let's have some super fun! See you guys there!
